Focusing on your wellbeing in World Mental Health Day

NLIG recognises the importance of good mental health in the workplace and the fact that many people struggled with their mental wellbeing during lockdown.

To this end, two of our employees, Rachel Karn and Caroline Mooney, are fully trained mental health responders, providing help to any member of staff requiring help or advice.

With World Mental Health Day taking place on Sunday October 10th, we are particularly focused on employee mental health and want to reassure all our employees that help is on hand if they need it.

The overall aim of World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness of mental health issues worldwide. Covid-19 has had a significant impact on people’s mental health, and some groups, including students, people living alone, those with pre-existing conditions, health workers and other frontline workers, have been particularly affected.

At the World Health Assembly in May 2021, governments from around the world recognised the need to scale up quality mental health services at all levels, and some countries have found new ways of providing mental health care to their populations.

During this year’s World Mental Health Day on October 10th, the World Health Organisation will be showcasing the efforts made in some of these countries and will encourage people to highlight positive stories as an inspiration to others.

There will also be lots of new material in easy-to-read formats about taking care of mental health and supporting others. Depression is a common mental health condition; it’s mild and short-lived for some, but it is more severe and longer-term for others. A lot can be done to prevent and treat depression - this is one of the subjects covered with lots of material available to help.

The good news is that there is a growing awareness of mental health issues, and help is more readily available. Most common mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, can be treated with talking therapies, medication or a combination of both.
