Motorists warned about Moped Riders 'Crashing for Cash' Scams

There has been a notable increase in "crash for cash" scams involving moped and scooter riders purposefully causing accidents with cars to make fraudulent insurance claims. These incidents have surged, especially in London, during 2023.

The Rise of Moped Scams
Allianz's latest data shows that the southern region of London has been the hardest hit, representing 42% of the city's reported incidents. In the borough of Sutton, Wallington has been one of the most frequently targeted areas, prompting residents to establish a WhatsApp group to exchange reports and remain alert.

The scams can involve moped riders working in pairs. One rider stops traffic, allowing the target vehicle to proceed, while the second rider speeds past and intentionally collides with the car. This tactic catches drivers off guard and leaves them vulnerable to fraudulent claims.

What is the Scale of the Problem
Since 2012, the total amount of fraudulent claims related to mopeds has soared to an incredible £27 million. From 2021 to 2023, these schemes defrauded a staggering 2,250 drivers in London, many involving courier employees. To tackle this alarming trend, the City of London Police’s Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED) has teamed up with Trading Standards officers to root out unscrupulous businesses engaged in repairing damaged mopeds and scooters. In a recent operation, authorities confiscated suspected crash-used mopeds and numerous disguised number plates.

How you can Protect Yourself from Crash for Cash
With the rise of these scams, it's more important than ever for motorists to be vigilant. Here are five tips to protect yourself:

Stay Alert: Always stay alert for any unusual driving behaviour, especially at junctions.
Document the Scene: Take as many photos as possible - especially the fraudster's moped and your vehicle.
Gather Information: Vehicle registrations, description, weather, time & date; gather as much as possible.
Collect Evidence: Are there any witnesses, CCTV, dashcam footage, and doorbell cameras?
